Development of a New Spider Web RibbonⓇ (SWRⓇ) Optical Fiber Plant Within Sakura Works Delivering a 30% Increase in SWRⓇ Production Capacity

October 28, 2022
Fujikura Ltd.

Fujikura Ltd. (Director, President and CEO, Naoki Okada) has announced its intention to build a new optical fiber production plant. With this, Fujikura looks to increase production of its optical fiber with 12-fiber spider web ribbon (SWRⓇ*1:Spider Web Ribbon) by about 30%.

With a plant area of around 3,000 ㎡, the new plant will be built at Sakura Works (Sakura City, Chiba), which is currently a domestic optical fiber production hub. The plant will be used to produce proprietary 12-f SWR , to be used with ultra-high density wrapping tube cables (WTC).
The new plant is scheduled to begin operation in 2025, and is expected to increase SWR production capacity by around 30%.

The new plant will incorporate DX (digital transformation) and GX (green transformation) innovations to bolster production efficiency while also delivering labor and energy cost savings.
Looking ahead, Fujikura will continue its efforts to contribute to the development of advanced information infrastructure experiencing burgeoning demand across the globe.

[Description of terms]
*1 Spider Web Ribbon (SWR) is Fujikura original ribbon of fibers that intermittently bonds multiple optical fibers in a longitudinal direction. This approach provides greater flexibility, allowing for high-density packaging within the cable, reducing cable diameter and making it possible to achieve higher densities.
*2 Wrapping Tube Cable (WTC) is the name of an ultra-high density optical fiber ribbon cable used with SWR. This cable helps drastically reduce construction times.
