To mark Wigans' first ever Go Green Week, Wigan Council and its waste and recycling partner FCC Environment are urging residents in the Borough to start a reuse revolution and rethink their rubbish before bringing it all to the Recycling Centres.
"Many of the items we receive for recycling and disposal have a long life left in them" says Tracy Roe, FCC Environments' Area Supervisor "and many of those items could go on to be sold to those in need so we are urging residents in Wigan to take advantage of the charity shops in the area to donate good quality items for re-sale.
"We have a really strong network of charity shops in the borough, many of which are doing great work to support a wide range of different communities and to help them thrive. And we are doing our bit too. Over time we have collected medial items such as crutches and commodes to be reused, garden tools to benefit prisons and each year we collect tonnes of books that can be enjoyed again and again. We do everything we can to reuse and repurpose as a better outcome than recycling or disposing of the waste that comes in."
Councillor Paul Prescott, Wigan Council's cabinet portfolio holder for environment, said: "Donating for reuse is the easiest way of not only reducing waste but supporting those in need - it really is a win-win situation.
"We all fund waste disposal through our council tax. In line with the Deal, it makes sense that the more we reduce waste the more we can reduce cost, and that is before we consider the environmental benefits that come with producing less waste.
"For items that are at the end of their useful life, recycling is still a great and easy way to make a positive impact and our three recycling centres are there to ensure your no longer needed items are handed in the right way."
The three sites are:
They are open seven days a week, from 0800-1945hrs in the summer and 0900-1745hrs in the winter, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day.
