Popular UW License Plates Get a New Look

The University of Wyoming Alumni Association (UWAA) has announced a new mountain design for UW license plates, which are Wyoming specialty plates. Wyoming law requires the license plate design change every eight years, with the new version readily distinguishable from the previous one.

"We could not be more excited for the next cycle of UW license plates," says Jack Tennant, UWAA executive director. "This program is a fantastic way for our alumni and friends who live in Wyoming to showcase their UW pride while contributing to a great cause. A big 'thank you' to everyone who voted and supported this effort."

The new license plate design represents the beauty of Wyoming's iconic mountain ranges, featuring a silhouette similar to that in the end zones of Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium.

In April, thousands of UW alumni and current UW plate owners voted for their favorite design. Two designs were offered -- both brown and gold, but one with gold mountains in the background and the other with gold stripes on the top and bottom. Both designs had "University of Wyoming" on the top and "GO POKES" on the bottom.

"The colors of brown and gold proudly adorn this plate, echoing the pride and loyalty that run deep in the hearts of Poke Nation," Tennant says. "With a nod to our cherished University of Wyoming and its famous 'Go Pokes,' this plate captures the essence of Wyoming's natural beauty and unwavering spirit."

The new design will mark the beginning of the third cycle of the UW license plate program, following two previous successful cycles that collectively sold more than 14,800 plates and raised more than $1.4 million in scholarship support for UW students.

The license plate program began in 2008.

As part of the transition to the new design, sales of the current gold UW plate will end Friday, May 31. The Wyoming Department of Transportation will send information about the renewal process later this year.

Current UW plate holders will have the opportunity to renew their plates and keep the same number. For plate numbers that are not renewed in the first year of the new cycle, the UWAA will begin a reassignment process starting in 2026.
