With the win, the Vikings improve to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the NSIC while the Golden Eagles fall to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in conference action.
Augustana secured the opening tip and drained a 3-pointer to open up the scoring for the Vikings early on. It was Minnesota Crookston's turn to enter the scoring column with a 7-0 run to take a 7-3 lead. Both teams traded buckets back-and-forth for the rest of the opening period with the Golden Eagles taking an 11-10 lead after one.
The Vikings jumped out to an 18-13 lead after a jumper from and a 22-17 lead after a layup from in the second quarter. Augustana earned its largest lead of the game at seven points after a fastbreak jumper from Shiffler to give the Vikings a 25-18 lead heading into the halftime break.
The third quarter was all Augie, as the Vikings extended their lead to 34-18 with a 9-0 run to open the second half. A layup gave Augie its biggest of the game thus far at 16 points with just over six minutes remaining in the quarter. The Vikings continued their hot streak in the third quarter, outscoring the Golden Eagles 22-13 in the quarter, to take a 47-31 lead after three-quarters of action.
The final quarter of action showed Minnesota Crookston not going down without a fight. A jumper from gave the Vikings the 51-37 lead but the Golden Eagles cut the lead to single digits at 53-45 with just over 5 minutes to play. A pair of free-throws from UMC cut the lead to six at 55-49 with 3:26 left, but a mini 5-0 run for the Vikings pushed the lead back to 11 at 60-49.
The Golden Eagles once again cut the lead down to as few as six but a clutch jumper from Mitby sealed the deal late and gave the Vikings the 63-54 victory.
Sees led all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting along with grabbing seven rebounds. Shiffler and Mitby chipped in with 12 and 11 points off the bench, respectively, and Metoxen finished with nine points and five rebounds.
As a team, the Vikings shot 35.8 percent from the field and knocked down 11-of-14 from the charity stripe for 78.6 percent. Augustana had 31 bench points and 26 points in the paint while forcing 19 turnovers and cashing in for 15 points off turnovers.
The Vikings finish the weekend when they travel to Bemidji, Minnesota, to take on Bemidji State on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
