UAB now home to the School of Education and Human Sciences

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is now home to the School of Education and Human Sciences. The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees approved the name change at its Feb. 2 meeting.

The School of Education and Human Sciences has been a distinguished institution of learning for many years, contributing significantly to the advancement of education and human development, in addition to its longstanding commitment to preparing educators and professionals who excel in the education and human science fields and make a positive impact on individuals and communities.

Teresa Taber Doughty, Ph.D., dean of the School of Education and Human Sciences, says the field of education and human sciences has evolved to encompass a broader range of disciplines, reflecting the complex interplay among education, psychology, counseling, kinesiology, learning sciences and other related fields, all of which are vital for the holistic development of individuals and communities.

"We are thrilled to announce our transition from the School of Education to the School of Education and Human Sciences, which reflects our commitment to inclusivity and acknowledges the diverse composition of our student body and faculty expertise," said Taber Doughty, Ph.D. "Our identity is evolving beyond the traditional focus of teacher education as we delve into the multifaceted aspects of human science - from physical and mental well-being to emotional and structural perspectives."

Taber Doughty says changing the name of the UAB School of Education to the UAB School of Education and Human Sciences will better reflect the diverse areas of expertise and academic programs it offers and promote a more inclusive and comprehensive understanding of its mission and activities.

"Though our foundation is deeply rooted in teacher education, our commitment remains unwavering to produce highly effective and well-prepared education professionals in Alabama," Taber Doughty said. "The new name, the School of Education and Human Sciences, aptly captures our broader mission, allowing us to champion educational endeavors across the diverse landscape of human sciences. We are eager to continue building our legacy of excellence and service to the residents of Alabama and beyond."
