Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after the Democratic House re-introduced H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act, and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act:

'Today is a happy and historic day, as the Democratic House re-introduces with great pride H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act, and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act - ensuring that the immigrants who make America more American can continue to contribute to and enrich our nation.

'The House salutes Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard, the godmother of H.R. 6, and Chair Zoe Lofgren, a champion of farmworkers, for their leadership. We thank the Dreamers, TPS and DED communities and farmworkers across the nation who have spoken out in defense of their rights with great dignity and eloquence, refusing to be forced back into the shadows.

'These landmark bills are a testament to this truth: that immigrants are the constant reinvigoration of our nation. And they honor our Founding ideals, respected by Presidents Republican and Democratic, including Ronald Reagan, who in his last speech as President said: 'If we ever closed the door to new Americans, our leadership in the world would soon be lost.'

'The Democratic House will pass these important bills and build on their progress with further action to honor our nation's immigrant heritage and ensure America's leadership in the world.'
