Washington, D.C.- U.S. Senate Banking Committee Ranking Member Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) released the following statement opposing Brian Nelson, nominee for U.S. Department of Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism.
"For months, Republicans on the Banking Committee have told the Biden administration that we would oppose the nomination of Brian Nelson unless the president follows the law and imposes sanctions on Russia's Nord Stream 2 AG. The president has refused to comply with the law and instead has reversed longstanding bipartisan U.S. policy and harmed our national security by handing Putin a geostrategic victory. For this reason, I voted against Mr. Nelson's confirmation to serve as Treasury's top sanctions official today."
In July, Senate Banking Committee Republicans sent a letterinforming Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen of Republicans' intent to oppose two Treasury nominees-Brian Nelson and Elizabeth Rosenberg-until the administration imposes mandatory sanctions on Nord Stream 2 AG (NS2AG), as required by law.
All Republicans on the Banking Committee voted against Mr. Nelson's nomination in October.
In September, Senators Toomey and Ted Cruz (R-Texas) sent a letterto Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez and Senate Banking Committee Chairman Sherrod Brown agreeing to proceed with the confirmation process for a number of Treasury and State Department nominees-including Brian Nelson-if President Biden sanctions NS2AG, as required by law.
