Support For LGBTQIA+ Community

Wyndham City is taking a stand against homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia and reaffirming its commitment to supporting the LGBTIQIA+ community this IDAHOBIT.

The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) is about recognising the challenges faced by members of our community who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and those who do not identify as any gender or sexual orientation.

IDAHOBIT is celebrated annually on 17th May and the theme for this year is anchored in allyship with calls to action to 'Go Rainbow, Educate and Change the World.'

To celebrate the day, Wyndham City will host an online flag raising ceremony at the Civic Centre in Werribee at 10am on 17th May 2021.

Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Adele Hegedich said 'the day was an opportunity to show support and address the many challenges faced by LGBTIQIA+ people in our community'.

'IDAHOBIT is not only an opportunity to raise awareness of the human rights of the LGBTQIA+ community, it is also a chance to celebrate the diversity in Wyndham'

Cr Hegedich said.

'There's still a lot of work to be done to champion all identities within the LGBTQIA+ community - 75 percent of LGBTQIA+ youth experience some form of discrimination and 77 percent of Trans and Gender Diverse people report being discriminated against in the past 12 months.'

'This day is about taking a stand and not tolerating discrimination against anyone based on their gender or sexual diversity.'

'Council has an important role to play promoting inclusion and we are proud of our strong partnership with the LGBTQIA+ community. We show our support by holding events such as Midsumma, LGBTQIA+ art exhibitions and library events.'

'On 17 May, we are hosting a special online flag raising ceremony at the Civic Centre in Werribee to show support for our LGBTQIA+ community.'
