Residents Share Ideas on County Budget

A steady stream of visitors took the chance to talk with County of San Diego executives Monday on what they'd like to see included in the next County budget.

Members of the public were invited to attend Budget Development Advocacy Day, held at the County Operations Center in Kearny Mesa.

Department heads and other County officials were on hand to informally chat with residents and hear what's important to them when it comes to spending taxpayer dollars.

The County's responsibilities cover three areas:

  • Administering state programs like social service assistance, health programs, foster care and adult protective services.
  • Regional services such as adult and youth detention facilities, criminal prosecution, elections, tax assessment and collection, air quality and beach water monitoring, and food and restaurant inspections.
  • Municipal services in non-city communities like law enforcement, libraries, parks, roads and land use zoning.

The County's current budget was adopted in June. The proposed budget for fiscal year 2020-21 will be released in May 2020. There will be a period for the public to review it and comment, followed by hearings at Board of Supervisors meetings in June 2020.
