Golf Tournament Raises Funds to Benefit Local Cancer Patient Care

DECATUR - The South Side Country Club women's golf league presented two checks totaling $5,090 to the Decatur Memorial Foundation to support cancer research and patient care at Decatur Memorial Hospital.

The checks were presented at the DMH Cancer Care Institute on the hospital's campus in Decatur.

The Par for the Cure Golf Tournament is held annually in June and has raised more than $300,000 since its inception to support care for cancer patients at DMH. Initiatives funded in part by the tournament include free mammograms for uninsured or underinsured women.

Committee members attending the presentation were Sue Phillips, Judy Carney, Toni Eichenauer, Sharon Ramey, Donna Rebert and Jean Shanefelt.

The fundraiser was initiated in 1998 by the late Sandy McKenzie, a South Side Country Club Women's golf league member, who was diagnosed with cancer and wanted to help others with a similar diagnosis. McKenzie died in 2002.

"Our group looks forward to carrying on Sandy's legacy through gifts of support for years to come," said Jan Miller, South Side Country Club Women's Golf League committee chairperson and close friend of McKenzie.
