Gerald says farewell after 43 years with Marshall

Senior Logistics Operative, Gerald Foster will be leaving Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group at the end of May with more than four decades of incredible service and dedication to the business under his belt.

Many of his fellow employees take great pride in calling him an integral part of the 'Marshall Family', so we asked Gerald to take a look back at where his memorable career all started:

'I started work with Marshall in May 1978 after hearing of an opportunity to work in the Omnibus Division. I was began as a storekeeper for the Vauxhall Midibus project in Cambridge, before joining the rest of the storemen in supporting the manufacture of new double decker buses.'

When the Omnibus Division at Marshall closed, Gerald was transferred to the Motor Bodies Division and spent five years there before claiming the role of Senior Leading Hand.

'Following my time at Motor Bodies, I had an appetite to apply my skills to aircraft and so I asked to be transferred to the Aerospace division, which is where I spent the rest of my career with Marshall.

'Every moment here has been fantastic and I've had the opportunity to not only develop my skills, but apply them to so many incredible contracts. A wealth of aircraft have passed through our hangars such as the BAE146's, MD11 Tristar's and of course those superb Hercs from all around the world!'

Marshall's family values are extremely important to the business and the company works extremely hard to provide support to their people. One of Gerald's key highlights was at his 30th and 40th Marshall Long Service Awards, where he was able to meet the late Sir Michael Marshall who he remembers as being 'such a warm and friendly man'.

Gerald continued:

'Marshall have always helped me to develop my career by providing a variety of in-house and external training such as the Dangerous Goods by Air, Sea and Road. I also had the truly proud moment of passing my NVQ at the age of 60!'

Very much like the business, Gerald is incredibly proud of his past but is now concentrating on his future, which will involve a return to his beloved Horse Racing and by making the most of his annual membership at his local Jockey Club in Newmarket.

Here's to a long, happy and very well earned retirement!
