emergency repair works to impact brown bin collections

EMERGENCY repair works to a sink hole that has appeared at Bayley Street Recycling Centre are to temporary affect Tameside brown bin recycling collections.

During the works, waste collected from Tameside households will need to be diverted to other tipping sites within Greater Manchester. This will inevitably lead to increased travel times for bin lorries.

To minimise the disruption this will have on overall bin collections, Tameside Council will be collecting brown bins (food and garden waste) on a fortnightly basis for a temporary period of four weeks from Monday 13 June 2022.

Residents are asked to check the Bin App or the council website at www.tameside.gov.uk/recycling to check which weeks their brown bins will be collected during this period.

Household recycling will still be accepted from residents at Bayley Street but trade and charity customers are requested to use alternative facilities at Arkwright Street in Oldham and Bredbury in Stockport.

Tameside Council Executive Member Cllr Denise Ward, responsible for waste collections, said: "The sink hole has been an unavoidable, natural event but we are doing everything we can to minimise the disruption this will cause overall to bin collections.

"We have tried to acquire additional crews and vehicles to cover the period of works but unfortunately there is a national shortage of both so this hasn't been possible. Therefore, to increase our capacity on other rounds while crews are facing additional travel times to offload waste, we have arranged for the fortnightly brown bin collections for a temporary period.

"Numerous neighbouring authorities already successfully run fortnightly food and garden waste collections on a permanent basis so we hope this work well and will cause minimal inconvenience to residents. We just ask that residents check the bin app or our website to find out which weeks their brown bin will be collected.

"My thanks to everyone for their understanding and patience."
