WASHINGTON-U.S. Representative Stephanie Murphy, D-Fla., a member of the House Armed Services Committee and a former national security specialist at the Pentagon, issued the following statement in support of Congress granting a waiver to allow Lloyd Austin to serve as Secretary of Defense before he completes the seven-year waiting period required for retired military officers:
'Along with my fellow members of the House Armed Services Committee, I spoke today with President Biden's choice for Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin. Based on his experience, intellect, and character, Mr. Austin is highly qualified to lead the Pentagon. Therefore, I will vote to grant him the necessary waiver, and I urge the Senate to swiftly confirm him.
'At this unique moment in American history, when the United States confronts a complex array of national security threats, Mr. Austin is the right person for the job.
'I am confident Mr. Austin will provide President Biden with sound military advice, skillfully plan and execute the Department's missions, and-as a combat veteran with extensive command experience-do everything within his power to care for our troops and their families.'
