F-Secure named winner in 2021 Artificial Intelligence Excellence Awards

Helsinki, Finland - March 29, 2021: The Business Intelligence Group today announced that cyber security provider F-Secure's Project Blackfin was named a winner in its Artificial Intelligence Excellence Awards program.

Project Blackfin - a multi-year research effort led by F-Secure's Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence - aims at advancing the use of collaborative and distributed approaches to artificial intelligence in the cyber security domain. Since its inception in 2019, the project has proven integral in the development of on-device intelligent agents capable of collaborating and working together to provide better protection to F-Secure's customers.

Project Blackfin has already produced new methods for anomaly-based detection and response to help protect companies from current and future threats, as well as reduce false positives and data transmission needs. Its outputs aim to help companies continually improve their security by capitalizing on the unique but complementary strengths of both humans and machines so that defenders can hunt down and contain threats quickly and efficiently.

According to F-Secure Vice President of Artificial Intelligence Matti Aksela, Project Blackfin's accomplishments in a brief period of time demonstrate the value of on-device intelligence in cyber security applications.

'Many cyber security companies use machine learning in their products, but at F-Secure we are taking a different approach - on-device intelligent agents with local learning to enable a distributed approach to AI, leading to faster reactions and a detailed understanding of the context and data,' explained Aksela. 'We're thrilled to receive this award in recognition of what we've already achieved. We're also making great progress in tackling the challenges associated with securing machine learning processes, and I'm excited to see what else our team can achieve as AI continues to grow in importance across the globe.'

'We are so proud to name F-Secure's Project Blackfin as a winner in our 3rd Artificial Intelligence Excellence Awards program,' said Maria Jimenez, chief nominations officer for Business Intelligence Group. 'It was clear to our judges that F-Secure was using AI to improve the lives of their customers. Congratulations to the entire team!'
