Murfreesboro, TN- (May 12, 2022) Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department (MFRD) is launching a Teen Fire Academy in July for local students ages 13 to 17. The fire academy teaches cadets about the fire service, provides teamwork, and leadership skills, and sparks interest in becoming a firefighter.

"This is a way of making a positive difference in the lives of teenagers and giving them a chance to see what it's like to be a firefighter," said Chief Mark Foulks. "We hope they will gain knowledge of the fire profession and consider a career in the fire service."

The Teen Firefighter Academy provides practical training to further the participants' knowledge, skills, and abilities in firefighting. The teen cadets will learn fire extinguisher training, hose stream, equipment use, and tour a fire station and the dispatch center. They will also watch several demonstrations including, extrication, fire investigation, search and rescue, live fire, and repelling.

The four-day fire academy will be held at the Doug Young Public Safety Training Center, 701 Bridge Ave., on July 11 - 14 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The cost of the camp is $25 per teen cadet.

Space is limited and open to 20 applicants.

At the end of the fire academy, the teens will participate in a graduation ceremony.
