President Erdoğan goes to the US to attend 76th session of UN General Assembly

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a press conference at Atatürk Airport in Istanbul before leaving for the US to attend the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Recalling that the last year's General Assembly, chaired by Ambassador Volkan Bozkır, couldn't be held in person due to the COVID-19 pandemic, President Erdoğan congratulated Mr. Bozkır, whose term ended on September 14, on the outstanding administrative skills he displayed during a difficult period.

Noting that this year the UN General Assembly will be held under the theme of 'Building Resilience through hope to recover from COVID-19, rebuild sustainably, respond to the needs of the planet, respect the rights of people, and revitalize the United Nations,' President Erdoğan said: 'Issues related to health, climate and sustainable development, which we attach great importance to and play significant roles in, are high on the agenda of the general debates. Some 110 heads of state and government are expected to attend the General Assembly in person.'

'I WILL VOICE FROM THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY PODIUM OUR STANCE ON THE CHALLENGES THAT THREATEN THE WHOLE HUMANITY'

Noting that he will address the General Assembly on the first day of the 76th session on Tuesday, September 21, President Erdoğan said that he would highlight in his address Turkey's strong support for multilateralism and the establishment of a more just world as well as sharing his views regarding basic issues that are on the UN agenda.

'I will voice from the General Assembly podium our stance on the challenges that threaten the whole humanity,' pointed out the President, adding that some events will be held online this year as different from previous years. In this regard, the President went on to say, he would attend via video link the UN Food Systems Summit and UN High-level Dialogue on Energy Meeting, both of which will be held online. President Erdoğan added that he would also have bilateral talks with numerous heads of state and government in addition to the UN Secretary-General.

Stating that he would meet during his stay in New York with representatives of Turkish, kin and Muslim communities in the U.S. at a conference, titled 'A Fairer World is Possible,' which will be held by the Turkish American National Steering Committee, President Erdoğan said: 'Together with our numerous local and foreign friends and guests, we will inaugurate with a meaning ceremony on Monday our Turkevi Center, which will house our diplomatic missions as well as the TRNC mission in New York.'
