SacCounty Social Services Volunteer Opportunities

April 21 - 27 is National Volunteer Week. If you want to find a way to help your community, there are several opportunities within Sacramento County's Social Services Departments.

There are volunteer options for people of all ages and abilities. From addressing homelessness to supporting children, families, and older adults, we've compiled a comprehensive guide for volunteer opportunities within Sacramento County's Social Services Departments.

Homeless Services:

Sacramento Steps Forward (SSF) collaborates with Sacramento County and other local and state agencies to combat homelessness. SSF follows a housing-first approach, emphasizing the need for stable housing. You can volunteer with SSF by taking on outreach support, data analysis, and community engagement roles to help people become housed.

Child, Family and Adult Services:

The Department of Child, Family and Adult Services (DCFAS) has opportunities for a wide range of skills. If you are looking for an opportunity that gets the whole family involved in giving back during the holidays, sign up for Gifts from the Heart. The program provides gifts for foster youth, disabled adults, and seniors. You can participate by becoming a community partner, sponsoring gifts, or volunteering your time.

Also, within DCFAS, there is the Foster Grandparent Program. The program engages volunteers who are 55 and older to mentor children and youth in various settings like schools, daycares, and juvenile halls. Volunteers receive benefits including a non-taxable stipend, training, and mileage reimbursement. If you enjoy working with kids or teens, meet the low-income criteria, and have at least 15 hours per week to spare, consider becoming a Foster Grandparent.

Health Services:

The County's Department of Health Services (DHS) offers both volunteer and student intern opportunities. DHS welcomes volunteers to contribute to improving services for people throughout Sacramento County. Explore options like becoming a WIC Clinic Assistant volunteer, or if you are a licensed medical professional, you can volunteer for clinical positions. For more information on clinical opportunities, check out the Sierra Medical Society website.
