Consultants Hired by City Council Successfully Stopped a Toll Road Through San Clemente

January 20, 2022…San Clemente, California…Beginning in 2017, the City of San Clemente's City Council directed City staff to hire consultants with the goal of stopping a toll road from being constructed through the City. At the January 18, 2022 Council meeting, the Council considered ending the contracts. The contracts ended in 2021 and, at the direction of the Toll Road Subcommittee, were not renewed.

"The Toll Road Subcommittee worked closely with consultants and City staff to protect San Clemente from a toll road. The City Council is committed to protecting our open space. We are thankful for the work these consultants did for our community," says Mayor Gene James and Toll Road Subcommittee member.

While the City Council confirmed the end of the consultants' contracts, the City Council did recognize the valuable result the consultants provided.

"The City Council hired consultants to protect our community and precious open space, and to stop a toll road. Together with City staff, we hired a team of consultants to meet that goal," says Councilmember Kathy Ward and Toll Road Subcommittee member. "They delivered."
