The Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia recognized Brenau University with an award for its impact on the community this spring.

The Community Service Award was given to the university on Saturday, May 4. Brenau offers a special Saturday workshop for local scouts, allowing them to interact with professors in various departments to learn the basics about the field and get hands-on experience with different career paths. The scouts earn a badge for their participation.

Girl Scout Saturdays started in 2022. The first event allowed the scouts to earn their potter's badge.

"We're teaching the children that ceramics are another positive way for self-expression," Huy Chu, assistant professor of art and design, said. "Gainesville and the surrounding area has a rich ceramics history. This is a great avenue for them to connect with that history."

The scouts made jewelry and pottery during the first workshop, and then went back another weekend to glaze and finish their creations.

Other Girl Scout Saturdays allowed the scouts to record a podcast at Brenau's radio station, 89.1 FM, get a backstage tour of a Gainesville Theatre Alliance production, and plant flowers in pots they painted with the Brenau University Garden Society. In addition, scouts participated in activities involving STEM, international culture, and various winter holiday traditions.
