Conemaugh Meyersdale Medical Center Awards ICU nurse with DAISY Award

Conemaugh Meyersdale Medical Center is thrilled to announce Carl Deal, RN, as a winner of the prestigious DAISY Award for extraordinary nurses.

Deal is the first nurse from Conemaugh Meyersdale Medical Center to be awarded the recognition. Nominated by a fellow coworker, Deal was praised for his kindness, compassion, and sincere care for his coworkers of the hospital.

"He's always willing to give a helping hand to all the departments. He is frequently mentioned in patient surveys where he is praised for giving his patients positive experiences during their visit."

Jessica Sverdigol-Peterman, Chief Nursing Officer of Conemaugh Meyersdale, reaffirmed the comments from Deal's nomination. "Carl is the nurse you want to emulate. He goes far above and beyond not only for his patients, but their families, his fellow nurses, and all the staff members of Conemaugh Meyersdale."

"He is extremely knowledgeable, yet constantly open to learning more every day. We are so grateful to have such a kind and caring person as part of the Conemaugh Meyersdale team. We're delighted to be able to recognize Carl for his immense dedication to the health system."

Deal joined the Conemaugh team in 1973 as an orderly before graduating from Somerset LPN School in 1975. After gaining experience as an LPN, he continued his medical education earning his RN degree from Shadyside Hospital School of Nursing in 1983 and his BSN from Carlow University in 1999. Deal also became critical care certified through the American Association of Critical Care Nurses in 1990. He served as a part-time instructor at Somerset LPN School while working at Conemaugh Meyersdale in various units. After some time away from the health system, Deal returned to Conemaugh Meyersdale in 2018 and presently works as a Charge Nurse in Med-Surg and in the emergency department.

Conemaugh Health System adopted the DAISY Award, an international program to recognize the outstanding work of our nurses across the health system, in 2023. Coworkers, providers, and patients may nominate a deserving nurse at Conemaugh Health System at Conemaugh.org/The-DAISY-Award.

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
