Public Invited to Informational Meeting Regarding the Replacement of Bridge Carrying Route 101 over Alvia Chase Reservoir in Killingly

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) will conduct a virtual public information meeting concerning the replacement of Bridge No. 02599 carrying Route 101 over Alvia Chase Reservoir in Killingly on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at 6:00 p.m.

The virtual public information meeting is being held to provide the public and local community the opportunity to offer comments or ask questions regarding the proposed project. The meeting will take place on Zoom and registration is required. A question and answer (Q&A) session will immediately follow the presentation. The presentation will be recorded. For instructions on how to access the meeting, ways to provide comments, and how to ask questions, please visit https://portal.ct.gov/DOTKillingly68-217.

"The project will address the deteriorated condition of the existing concrete deck and superstructure, improving safety for motorists and extending the service life of the bridge," said Connecticut Department of Transportation Project Manager Brianna Ritacco. "We encourage the community to attend this informational meeting to learn more about the project and offer feedback to the CTDOT project team to incorporate into the design and construction plans."

Bridge No. 02599 is a single span reinforced concrete slab supported by reinforced concrete abutments and wingwalls. The bridge is in poor condition and will be replaced with a 12-foot wide by 9-foot high precast concrete box culvert, with 2.5 feet of natural streambed material placed along the bottom of the structure. Reinforced concrete wingwalls founded on spread footings will be constructed at the inlet and outlet of the culvert. The precast concrete box culvert will be supported by cutoff and return walls at either end of the structure.

Construction will be performed using accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques over an approximate two-week detour.

There are right-of-way impacts associated with the proposed improvements consisting of two construction easements.

Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2027 based on the availability of funding, acquisition of rights of way, and approval of permit(s). The estimated construction cost for this project is approximately $3.7 million. This project is anticipated to be undertaken with 80% federal funds and 20% state funds.
