Fostering Next-Gen Entrepreneurs and Innovators| E-S-I Webinar #10

Jakarta, 25 November 2021: In times of great disruptions, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, more innovators are needed to tackle emerging challenges. Entrepreneurs and innovators are individuals who see opportunities early and develop new ideas and knowledge to exploit them. Many innovators and entrepreneurs aim to tackle problems by offering innovative solutions arising from either the public or the private sector. Well-functioning and cohesive innovation eco-systems are essential for entrepreneurs and innovators to thrive. This requires the development of linkages and connections among a very broad set of actors: governmental agencies, MSMEs, larger corporations, start-ups, funders, research labs, universities, and training institutions, to combine new and existing knowledge in new ways and inter-disciplinary manners.

The final episode of ERIA's Entrepreneurship, Start-Up, and Innovation (E-S-I) webinar series with the theme 'Fostering Next-Gen Entrepreneurs and Innovators - 2021 In Retrospect: Looking Back and Empowered Forward' was held on 25 November 2021 discussed how innovators and entrepreneurs can thrive in the post-pandemic world with experts from the public and private sectors, start-uppers and innovators, eco-system builders working with education and research institutions and think-tankers. This episode wrapped up all 10 episodes of ESI webinar that had attracted more than 2000 participants across Asia Pacific region.

Five speakers shared their perspective on how to nurture different types of skill sets to foster the next-gen entrepreneurs and innovators.

  • Yukako Idehara, Planning and Coordination Manager, Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA)
  • Adam Corrall, General Manager, Asia, Australasian Premium Partners, Vietnam
  • Agata Zborowska, Chief Operating Officer, ConceptionX, United Kingdom
  • Ji Eun Chung, Chief Executive Officer, CODIT, Republic of Korea

Pranpreya Sriwannawit Lundberg, Policy Specialist, Office of National Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Policy Council (NXPO), Thailand shared some policy initiatives that foster entrepreneurship, research, and innovation ecosystem in Thailand. She explained one of the programmes called the 'talent mobility programme' that aims to promote research activities in the country and to build links between universities and industries for Thailand's competitiveness. Due to rapid digitalisation and automation, she also highlighted the importance of soft skills that could not only be acquired in the classroom but must include experiential learning.

Agata Zborowska, Chief Operating Officer, ConceptionX, UK shared her perspective on the importance of venture building to help Ph.D. students commercialise their research. She highlighted the important role of universities to shape thinking ability and generate ideas. She added the need for a bridge builder to transform ideas and to train enterprise skills such as finance and marketing to students. In addition, she also highlighted the role of government and universities to provide practical knowledge for future generations in developing their business and tackling tomorrow's problems.

Adam Corrall, General Manager, Asia, Australasian Premium Partners, Vietnam shared his experience on developing sustainable global trade and investment in particular between Australia and Vietnam. He observed the growth of adoption of technology and innovation across business industries in Vietnam. He highlighted the importance of understanding markets and regulation to define business models to secure capital investment.

Yukako Idehara, Planning and Coordination Manager, ERIA discussed the importance of leadership and followership elements. She explained further the definition of followership as part of the leadership that demonstrates several skillsets including active participation, working independently, and becoming accountable. She also noted the importance of nurturing the next generations that reflected ERIA programmes called 'The 2021 ERIA-YNG Social Impact Idea Competition' as the platform to stimulate and foster innovation for global young talents.

Ji Eun Chung, Chief Executive Officer, CODIT, Republic of Korea, shared her perspective on the importance of understanding and compliance to existing state policies to define business strategies and manage the risk. She noted that the pandemic has changed the business landscape and requires people to be agile and adaptive. She added the importance of deepening the engagement between public and private stakeholders to nurture innovation in the next generation. In addition, she highlighted supporting gen Z as a digital native will help to look beyond the pandemic and business opportunities in the future.

The webinar series was co-hosted by Dr Giulia Ajmone Marsan (ERIA), Ms Lina Maulidina Sabrina, Programme Officer, ERIA and Mr TJ Ooi, Founder of Curated Connectors, a Singapore-based start-up. During the Q&A session, speakers shared insights on how to navigate ideas onto actual business and start-ups and required skillsets to be a lifelong learner.
