Rubio Praises EAA Reservoir Announcement, Promises Continued Commitment to Everglades Restoration

Washington, D.C. -
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) praised the agreement between the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin construction of the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Storage Reservoir. The Project Partnership Agreement allows for the construction of the EAA Storage Reservoir, which was authorized as part of the Central Everglades Planning Project (CEPP) thanks to Rubio's efforts. In 2020, Senator Rubio secured a provision in the Water Resources Development Act of 2020 to force the Army Corps to move forward with construction of the EAA Reservoir, after the Army Corps bureaucracy ignored Congressional intent, and delayed the project. Today's agreement to initiate construction of the Federal portion of the Reservoir was made possible by Senator Rubio's efforts.'Today's announcement is great news for Florida,' Rubio said. 'The EAA reservoir is a critical piece of infrastructure that will move Everglades restoration forward and reduce the threat that harmful discharges from Lake Okeechobee pose to our coastal communities.''I will continue working with my colleagues to ensure the federal commitment to this historic project continues,' Rubio continued. 'We can never allow another decade of bureaucratic mismanagement and delays to block us from realizing our long-standing goal of restoring, preserving and protecting Florida's ecosystems, while equitably and effectively managing our region's water resources,'Last year, Rubio secured $250 million in federal appropriations for South Florida Ecosystem Restoration, which funds a suite of Everglades projects, including the Central Everglades Planning Project. In March, Rubio and the entire Florida House delegation urged the Biden Administration to request $725 million for Everglades restoration for fiscal year 2022.
