Adverse marine weather – Met. Department

Issuing a marine weather forecast today (17), the Meteorology Department warns fishermen to refrain from fishing and naval activities in following sea areas during the next 24 hours.

Met. Department said the wind speed can be increased up to 60-70 kmph in the sea area extending from Kankasanturai to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Galle and Hambantota while indicating likely swell waves (2.0 - 2.5 meters) in aforesaid sea areas.

Showers or thundershowers will take place at times in the seas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.

Showers or thundershowers will take place in a few places in the other sea areas around the island during the evening/night.

Winds will be south-westerly and wind speed will be (40-45) kmph which can be increased up to 60-70 kmph in the sea area extending from Kankasanturai to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Galle and Hambantota.

Further, the wind speed can increase up to (50-60) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanturai to Trincomalee, the Met. Department added.
