- The Vikings picked up their first win of the season with an 8-2 win over Sam Houston State Friday morning at the Bobcat Classic hosted by Texas State in San Marcos, Texas. Portland State then fell to No. 9 Florida State, 18-1, in five innings. It was the first grand slam by a Viking since 2014. Junior RHP went to work in the bottom of the first. She threw two perfect innings, including back-to-back strikeouts, as the score remained 4-0 into the third inning. Sam Houston State plated a run with a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning. The Vikings doubled their run total with four more in the top of the fourth. With one out in the inning, Alexis Ponce reached on a hit by pitch. Gunesch followed with a single to left. Bruno walked to once again load the bases. Lindsey cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right center to put the Vikings up 7-1. Morrow came up next and singled up the middle to drive in Lindsey to put the Vikings up 8-1. The RBI single gave Morrow her first career five-RBI game and the first by a Viking since 2016. Burk surrendered a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fourth but came back with a strikeout for the first out. She then induced a 6-4-3 double-play to get out of the inning. Sam Houston State plated a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it an 8-2 game after a one-out walk came around to score. The Bearcats had runners in scoring position over the final two innings but Burk was able to strand them all as she closed out her first win of the season. Lindsey went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs in the game. Morrow went 2-for-4 with a run scored and five RBIs. Burk allowed four hits over seven complete innings. She allowed two earned runs, walked four, and struck out five. The Vikings had a quick turnaround for their second game of the day against No. 9 Florida State. The Seminoles struck early and often, plating three runs in each of the first two innings. They added six runs on a pair of home runs in the third to take a 12-0 lead. After being held without a hit for the first three innings, Lindsey broke up the no-hit bid with a double to right field. Morrow moved her to third with a single to center. Freshman picked up her first career hit and RBI with a single to third base, bringing in Lindsey from third for Portland State's lone run of the game. Florida State tagged on six more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the game 18-1 in five innings. Lindsey closed out the day going 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a double, a triple, and three runs batted in. Portland State will face Sam Houston State and Florida State again Saturday at 1:00 p.m. PT and 3:30 p.m. PT respectively.
