Immigration Justice Campaign Recognizes Pro Bono Work of Three Lowenstein Lawyers

Partners Catherine Weissand Peter Slocum and associate Allison Gabala have been honored by the Immigration Justice Campaign as Volunteers of the Quarter in recognition of their generosity in providing high-quality pro bono services through the Lowenstein Center for the Public Interest.

The Campaign works with a broad network of pro bono allies to serve detained individuals who would otherwise go unrepresented and provides volunteers with the knowledge and tools to speak out against policies that dehumanize and harm immigrant communities. In bestowing these awards to the Lowenstein team, the organization cited the attorneys' work on the case of two Indonesian Christian clients based in New Jersey who fled anti-Christian and anti-Chinese violence to seek refuge and the freedom to practice their religion.

In 2017, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security began to detain and deport Indonesian Christians. Working with the ACLU of New Jersey, the center has represented clients in a years-long struggle (detailed in the center's 2018 Pro Bono Report) to gain asylum and the right to remain here with their U.S. citizen children.

This year, Weiss, the center's Chair; Slocum, partner in the firm's White Collar Criminal Defense practice; and Gabala, a member of the Environmental Law & Litigation group, won a motion to reopen the clients' asylum cases on appeal to the Board of Immigration Appeals, and they are now vigorously pursuing asylum for them in immigration court.
