Kildee Supports Passage of NO BAN Act

WASHINGTON-Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, today applauded the U.S. House of Representatives for passing the National Origin-Based Antidiscrimination for Nonimmigrants (NO BAN) Act to prohibit discrimination based on religion and limit the ability of the executive branch to issue overly broad travel bans.

On the first day of his presidency, President Joe Biden rescinded a series of Executive Orders by the last administration to restrict refugees coming to America from several Muslim-majority countries.

'Discriminatory bans based on one's religion make America less safe. Counterterrorism and national security officials have voiced concerns that such bans are a powerful recruiting tool for terrorists trying to do us harm. I am pleased the U.S. House of Representatives once again has passed the NO BAN Act to reestablish Congress' role in setting policy and ensuring that we live up to our country's founding principles,' said Congressman Dan Kildee.

The NO BAN Act would:

  • Expand the non-discrimination provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act to prohibit discrimination based on religion;
  • Require the executive branch to base any future immigration or travel restrictions on 'specific and credible facts' connected to 'specific acts' that have occurred; and
  • Establish a system of checks and balances, whereby Congress would be routinely notified and briefed on the status, implementation and constitutional and legislative authority of the executive branch's actions.
