SEGRO joins United Nations Race to Zero campaign and The Climate Pledge

SEGRO joins United Nations Race to Zero campaign and The Climate Pledge

29 October 2021

Following its commitment earlier this year to be net-zero carbon by 2030, SEGRO has joined the United Nations Race to Zero initiative, the global campaign to support a healthy, resilient, zero carbon recovery that prevents future threats, creates decent jobs, and unlocks inclusive, sustainable growth. SEGRO also announced it has signed The Climate Pledge, a commitment to achieve the Paris Agreement 10 years early, and be net-zero carbon by 2040 or sooner.

Race to Zero members must pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions as soon as possible or by the middle of the century at the latest, to take immediate action to start delivering against interim and long-term targets and to report their progress publicly.

SEGRO joined the Race to Zero campaign via partner network The Climate Pledge, which was co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism in 2019. The Climate Pledge requires signatories to be net-zero carbon by 2040 - which SEGRO's 2030 target achieves, including a commitment to measure and report regularly on greenhouse gas emissions, to implement decarbonisation strategies in line with the Paris Agreement and to neutralise remaining emissions through credible offset programmes.

David Sleath, Chief Executive Officer, SEGRO, said:

"We recognise that the planet is facing a climate emergency. Earlier this year we launched our Responsible SEGRO framework which sets out our three long-term priorities to which we can make the greatest business, environmental and social contribution. One of these is championing low carbon growth and we've been actively pursuing this ambition across our business, for example at our new SEGRO Park Tottenham development and our refurbishment at Premier Park.

"We want to be at the forefront of the collaborative effort that is needed globally to address the climate challenge and, as we have already committed to be net-zero carbon by 2030, joining the UN's Race to Zero and The Climate Pledge is a sensible, natural next step on this journey."

The Responsible SEGRO framework formalises the company's commitment to be a force for societal and environmental good. Within the framework, the Championing Low-Carbon Growth sets clear am-bitions around building lower-carbon spaces, running lower-carbon spaces and absorbing any residual carbon in line with limiting global temperature rise to less than 1.5 degrees.
