Final Public Meeting About Citywide Flood Protection Program Set for Oct. 29

The last in a series of public meetings designed to educate Virginia Beach residents about the Flood Protection Program bond referendum on this year's General Election ballot takes place on Friday, Oct. 29 at noon via WebEx.

The bond referendum asks residents to vote on authorizing $567.5 million dollars in debt to fund the design and construction of 21 projects included in Phase 1 of the citywide Flood Protection Program. As with previous meetings on the subject, City staff will provide details on the Phase 1 projects and answer residents' questions.

The referendum funding will allow the City to accelerate flood protection projects currently underway and expand to include several new projects. The proposed Phase 1 projects will be built over 10 years, which is much sooner than the current schedule. To fund the projects, the City is proposing an increase in the real estate tax of 4.3 cents per $100 of a property's assessed value.

"The public meetings are just one of several methods the City has used to provide our residents with the information they need to make an informed decision about this investment," said Mayor Robert M. "Bobby" Dyer. "In addition to the meetings, we have a dedicated website and produced mailings, services bill inserts, brochures, videos, outdoor signage and digital placements to make the information as accessible to people as possible."
