Cayle Bell (SR/Fort St. John, British Columbia)'s third-period tally with 14:44 remaining proved to be the game-winning goal for the University of Jamestown hockey team Saturday night at John L. Wilson Arena. The 13th-ranked Jimmies swept the weekend series with the No. 4 Minot State University Beavers, winning Friday night 4-1 and Saturday night 3-2. With the weekend's two wins, Jamestown moves to 5-2 against the Beavers this season.
Jordan Popoff (FR/Calgary, Alberta) kicked off the scoring in the first period with a wrist shot from the point with assists from Trevor Okino (SR/Richmond, British Columbia) and Jeremy McNeil (SR/Calgary, Alberta) at 9:59. Minot State quickly responded off of a point shot of their own from Eric Soar to tie the game at 1.
The back-and-forth battle continued in the second period when Bryan Kromm (SR/Stockton, Calif.) found the net at 6:41 with assists from Tyler Chavez-Leech (JR/Red Deer, Alberta) and Aidan Potas (FR/Fargo, N.D.). The Beavers once again responded on a tally from Johl Swedlo to even the score.
Cayle Bell broke the tie on the power play at 5:16 of the third period with help from Bryan Kromm and Carter Johnson (SO/Meeteetse, Wyo.). The Jimmies stood tall with a gritty defensive effort in the third to hang on to the lead. Tyson Brouwer (SR/Lethbridge, Alberta) was stellar as he turned aside 26 shots in the contest.
Jamestown was 1-5 on the power play while the Beavers were 0-3. With the win, the Jimmies strengthen their overall record to 21-6 on the year. Next up for the Jimmies is a two game road trip at Williston State College next Friday and Saturday.
