Martin Tuchman School of Management Names Four Endowed Chairs

Four new endowed chairs were appointed in NJIT's Martin Tuchman School of Management this summer.

The titles went to existing professors known for their experience and success at the business college: Cesar Bandera, Leir Chair in Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Management; Yi Chen, Tuchman' 62 Chair; Junmin Shi, Leir Chair in Business, Technology and Society; and Dantong Yu, Hurlburt Chair.

"These positions are for the best of your faculty, based on research they do or the grants that they bring," explained Oya Tukel, dean.

"This year we put one faculty in each of these endowed chairs positions," each receiving a grant for $25,000 or more, Tukel said. "They're required to support a doctoral student, and they provide a report that we share with the foundations in terms of how they're using the money and what impact their research has with the help of this money."

Bandera, associate professor of entrepreneurship, helped the business school reach #34 nationally in a Princeton Review ranking last year.

Chen, professor of business data science, uses machine learning to simplify electronic health records.

Yu, associate professor of business data science, is applying his expertise to help nuclear scientists understand their massive amounts of data from experiments.

Shi, associate professor of supply chain management and finance, is working on the implementation of blockchain software for supply chains - the applications could be as straightforward as a consumer using a grocery store's mobile app to track the ingredients of an organic apple, he noted.

"For the Leir endowed chair position, it's prestigious, and we have a very long connection with the Leir foundation. They provide very generous support for us," Shi added. "To me it's another [means of] support to continue my professional development, and it means a lot to me."
