07 May 2022

The Minister of Foreign Affairs (MFA), João Gomes Cravinho, will meet this Monday, his Spanish counterpart in Madrid, where hecelebrates Europe Day. This will be the Minister's first bilateral visit to a European country.

The bilateral relations will be at the centre of the meeting's agenda between the two Ministers, as well as the conflict caused by Russia's invasion of the Ukrainian territory and the resulting energy crisis. The meeting will take place at the Palace of Viana, headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with scheduled joint statements by Minister João Gomes Cravinho and Minister José Manuel Albares.

In the afternoon, the MFA will participate and speak in the conference "An Iberian Vision of the Challenges of the European Union", alongside his Spanish counterpart.

The current situation in Ukraine is once again highlighted, in a session in which the two ministers will answer the question of whether the war in Ukraine could strengthen the geostrategic position of the European Union at a global level.

This conference, to be held on this commemorative Day, will include questions from the public to the two ministers, having as background the two leaders' vision of how Portugal and Spain can contribute to a more independent, strong, and fair Europe (programme attached).
