The Union Pacific Railroad has been updating the track system from Chicago to St. Louis. New tracks, crossings, and the new depot are the most visible elements of these upgrades. As a result of these and other improvements, Amtrak and freight trains will no longer have to blow their horns from one end of town to the other. A Quiet Zone has been established where use of the horn is at the discretion of the engineer who may use it for safety purposes or to comply with other railroad rules. The new rules will go into effect on January 8, 2018. There will still be train horns, but the reduction will be a significant improvement.
