DGA Statement on Anniversary of the Dobbs LeakFrom the Chair’s Desk Year in Review

DGA Chair Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz released the following statement on the two-year anniversary of the Supreme Court's ruling in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision leak:

"When the leaked Dobbs decision sent patients, providers, and millions of Americans into a tailspin two years ago, Democratic governors immediately swung into action to protect access to reproductive freedom for the people in our states and have continued fighting to do so ever since. This is in contrast to an extreme Republican party that won't stop their attacks on reproductive rights until they get what they want - a nationwide abortion ban, monitoring private medical records, banning birth control, attacking IVF, and more.

"This year, reproductive rights are on the ballot in states like North Carolina and New Hampshire, where extremists threaten to further restrict access to abortion. We can't let that happen. Electing Democratic governors is the best way to protect reproductive freedom for millions of women across the country and prevent Republicans from taking our states and our country backwards."

Key examples of how Democratic governors have protected reproductive rights in their states since the Dobb decision.

• DGA Chair and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul have all signed legislation to codify abortion rights into state law.
• Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, Delaware Gov. John Carney, Hawaii Gov. Josh Green, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee signed legislation that shielded abortion providers from criminal prosecution and out-of-state legal attacks.
• Maine Gov. Janet Mills, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, and Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee, and Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs issued executive orders that protected reproductive freedoms, patients, providers and prevented other states from taking action against women seeking abortion in their states.
• Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs vetoed an extreme bill restricting access to abortion rights and Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers took direct action to oppose Wisconsin's arcane 1849 law that banned abortions.
• Govs. Healey, Hochul, Kotek, Inslee and Newsom were among those who established stockpiles of abortion medications to ensure their citizens can access the care they need.
• Over 20 Democratic governors formed an alliance in the wake of the overturning of Roe v. Wade to protect and expand abortion access in their states.
