Atmos Energy Supports CitySquare to Combat Hunger

DALLAS - Oct. 6, 2021 - Atmos Energy recently donated $150,000 to CitySquare's food programs, which will help relieve hunger across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. CitySquare is experiencing greater need than ever before. Last year alone, CitySquare distributed 2.8 million pounds of food to 13,209 neighbors through the CitySquare Food Pantry. More than 22,000 healthy meals were created from 29,586 pounds of recovered edible food that would have been otherwise wasted. Over 500,000 meals were served in the organization's after school and summer food programs. This gift is one of hundreds made by Atmos Energy as part of an enterprise-wide Fueling Safe and Thriving Communities drive to invest in educational, literacy, energy assistance, and food security resources across the 1,400 communities it serves.

"The past two years have produced unprecedented food insecurity. We see many folks coming to CitySquare for the first time," said CitySquare President and CEO John Siburt. "Atmos Energy's generosity will help CitySquare meet this increased demand and fulfill food needs for individuals, families and children we serve throughout D-FW."

CitySquare's Food Pantry operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no pre-registration required. Open to all zip codes, neighbors can pick up groceries at the food pantry once every two weeks and receive fresh fruits and vegetables, canned goods, frozen meat, dairy, and bakery items. Focused on the health of its community, staff, and volunteers, CitySquare operates a drive-thru food pantry and a walk-up station for individuals who walk or take the bus. Groceries are pre-packed to ensure the process is quick and safe and to maintain necessary safety precautions.

"Through our Fueling Safe and Thriving Communities program, we believe in making a difference in our communities by partnering with vital organizations like CitySquare," said Oric Walker, Atmos Energy vice president of public affairs. "CitySquare is committed to equality and inclusiveness and recognizes that it takes the entire community to fight hunger. When we work together, we multiply the impact for our neighbors."

In partnership with hundreds of organizations, Atmos Energy's Fueling Safe and Thriving Communities outreach benefits school districts, nonprofits, after school programs, and food banks through everything from backpacks and laptops to nutritious breakfasts to books that help early childhood learners read on level by third grade. Vulnerable households will also have access to funds through local energy assistance agencies that provide support with utility bills, weatherization, customer natural gas line repairs, and natural gas appliance repairs and replacements.
