Speaking on the floor of the Seanad today, Sinn Féin Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile has invited Oireachtas members to his native city of Belfast for this Saturday's 'An Lá Dearg'.

Speaking from Leinster House this afternoon, Seanadóir Ó Donnghaile said;

'Belfast is the beating heart of the Irish Language Revival; I look forward to seeing thousands of people descend on our city for what promises to be a huge showcase event, not just for An Ghaeilge, but for diversity, human rights, respect and inclusion.

'Saturday's 'Lá Dearg' is the culmination of the coming together of a broad range of cultural, artistic, sporting, educational, trade union and community organisations from all traditions and backgrounds in the North under the banner of 'An Dream Dearg'. It is sure to following in the same vein as other Irish Language events in being colourful, loud, inclusive, diverse and positive.

'At the heart of this campaign however is the demand for rights, equality and respect for Irish speakers and for the implementation of outstanding agreements which will give legal protections and recognition to our community.

'Today I encouraged members of the Seanad to join with the majority of MLA's in the Assembly, the Irish Government, the UN and the EU Council's Committee of Experts in supporting the call for the implementation of an Acht na Gaeilge and I encouraged them to attend Saturday's event. I know many of my colleagues have a deep love for the Irish Language and want to see it flourish; I look forward to seeing them on the Falls Road this Saturday.'

Cuireann Ó Donnghaile fáilte roimh baill den Oireachtas freastal ar 'An Lá Dearg'

Ag labhairt dó sa Seanad inniu, thug seanadóir de chuid Shinn Fein Niall Ó Donnghaile cuireadh chuig a chathair dhúchais Béal Feirste le haghaidh 'An Lá Dearg' Dé Sathairn seo chugainn.

Ag labhairt dó i dTeach Laighean tráthnóna dúirt An Seanadóir Ó Donnghaile:

'Is é Béal Feirste cróilár athbheochan na Gaeilge; Táim ag tnúth leis na mílte duine a fheiceáil ag teacht amach ar shráideanna na cathrach ag an ócáid chinniúnach seo, ní hamháin don Ghaeilge ach don chiomhannas, cearta daonna, meas, an éagsúlacht agus

'Is éard atá i gceist le hócáid an tSathairn ná toradh ar theacht le chéile réimse leathan d'eagrais chultúrtha, ealíon, oideachais, ceardchumainn, sportúil agus pobail ón uile chineáil cúlra agus traidisiúin sa tuaisceart faoi scáth 'An Dream Dearg'. Bí cinnte go mbeidh sé dathúilglórach, dearfach, uileghabhálach agus ilchineálach.

'Ag croílár an fheachtais seo , áfach, tá an t-éileamh ar chearta, comhionannas agus meas ar lucht labhartha na Gaeilge agus ar chur i bhfeidhm na gcomhaontuithe uilig a rinneadh cheana féin lena mbronntar cosaint dhlíthiúil agus aitheantas do phobal na Gaeilge.

'Inniu ghríosaigh mé baill an tSeanaid a bheith linn agus le tromlach na BTR sa Tionól, Rialtas na hÉireann, Na Náisiúin Aontaithe agus Comhairle Saineolaithe Chomhairle na hEorpa a thacaíonn leis an éileamh ar Acht na Gaeilge a chur i bhfeidhm agus chun freastal ar an ócáid féin. Tá a fhios agam go bhfuil cion ag mo chomhghleacaithe ar an Ghaeilge agus ba mhian leo go mbeadh sí faoi bhláth ó thuaidh; Tá súil agam go bhfeicfidh mé iad ar Bhóthar na bhFál an Satharn beag seo.'
