Zody statement on Huston election

INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana Democratic Party Chairman John Zody issued the following statement after Indiana House Republicans selected Rep. Todd Huston as Speaker-elect.

'Todd Huston is his own worst enemy. In 'winning' behind closed doors today, Rep. Huston just made his own reelection a tossup. Huston will be catching wind with a net to keep ultra-conservative allies on board while running in a purple district. Every bone he throws to extremists is at the expense of moderates in a constituency that elected a Democrat in 2019. There's no winning when Speaker Huston's decisions imperil Representative Huston's electoral future.'

  • In 2016, State Rep. Todd Huston - who represents a suburban legislative district within CD5 - won by 28 points. He won by 8 points in 2018.
  • In 2018, Senator Joe Donnelly won HD37.
  • In 2019, Democrats amassed more votes in Huston's district.
    • Added together, the top vote-getting Democrats in council races within HD37 (Fishers and Noblesville) outpaced Republicans (Dem: 4,094 Rep: 4,049).
