Teen is Violence Awareness and Prevention Month

RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner each year; and

WHEREAS, one in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner, a figure that far exceeds rates of other types of youth violence; and

WHEREAS, one in ten high school students has been purposefully hit, slapped or physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend; and

WHEREAS, among female victims of intimate partner violence, 94 percent of those age 16-19 were victimized by a current or former boyfriend or girlfriend; and

WHEREAS, teens in same-sex relationships experience rates of violence and abuse similar to rates experienced by teens in heterosexual relationships; and

WHEREAS, violent behavior typically begins between the ages of 12 and 18; and

WHEREAS, violent relationships in adolescence can have serious ramifications by putting the victims at higher risk for substance abuse, eating disorders, risky sexual behavior and further domestic violence; and

WHEREAS, being physically or sexually abused makes teen girls 6 times more likely to become pregnant and twice as likely to get a sexually transmitted infection; and

WHEREAS, teens who are victims of teen dating violence are more likely to be depressed and do poorly in school; and

WHEREAS, to raise awareness about teen dating violence, the State of Ohio is participating in the ninth National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month.

NOW, THEREFORE, We, John R. Kasich and Mary Taylor, Governor and Lieutenant Governor of the State of Ohio, do hereby recognize February 2018 as

TEEN DATING VIOLENCE AWARENESS

AND PREVENTION MONTH

throughout Ohio and encourage all communities, businesses, local governments, law enforcement and individuals to respond and work toward ending teen dating violence by supporting community efforts to empower teens to develop healthier relationships.
