Southern Water selects Cambi for its first thermal hydrolysis plant

Asker, Norway, 29 March 2021 Cambi will supply a thermal hydrolysis plant to Southern Water for the Goddards Green Sludge Recycling Centre (SRC) near Burgess Hill in West Sussex, UK. Delivered in partnership with Galliford Try, the new Cambi plant will process sewage sludge from Burgess Hill and surrounding areas, serving a population equivalent of approximately 300,000. In addition to solving odour issues, thermal hydrolysis will increase digester throughput at Goddards Green and deliver pathogen-free biosolids suitable as an agricultural soil enhancer. 'Cambi has more than 20 plants of all sizes in operation in the UK, accounting for about 40% of all sewage sludge treated in the market. Goddards Green will be Cambi's first project for Southern Water and the third B2 system in the UK,' said Eirik Fadnes, Cambi Group CEO. Biosolids treatment at Goddards Green currently relies on liming. The unstable digested cake causes odour issues, which Southern Water has been monitoring. Eliminating the odour nuisance is deemed essential to attract high added-value jobs to the area. Southern Water thus decided to replace the lime treatment process with advanced anaerobic digestion and Cambi's thermal hydrolysis process. Southern Water is the private utility company responsible for the public wastewater collection and treatment in Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, West Sussex, East Sussex, and Kent. It owns 367 wastewater treatment works and sludge treatment centres. The compact B2 plant comes packaged on one skid with the footprint of shipping containers, designed and manufactured for quick and straightforward installation. Commissioning is planned for next year.
