Killeen releases short-term rental registration and workshop information

KILLEEN, Texas (April 16, 2024) - Beginning May 1, 2024, citizens must begin to register their short-term rentals (STR) with the City of Killeen at www.KilleenTexas.gov/STR.

Killeen's City Council approved a short-term rental program to go into effect on Oct. 1, 2023. Operators of short term rentals, like Airbnb's and Vrbo'swill rent out a residential home unit or building portion for a short period of time. Many times, these temporary stays are an additional option to hotels and include full kitchens, spacious living areas and upgraded amenities.

All short-term rental operators must register their properties with the City, ensuring they meet safety and zoning requirements. Short term rental owners are also required to collect Hotel Occupancy Taxes from their guests for the City, County and State, as well as remit the City and County payment portions.

It is a violation of the City's Code of Ordinances to operate a short-term rental without acquiring the proper permits and completing registration.

Those who register their short-term rental from May 1 - May 31 will have their registration fees waived.

There are many benefits to properly registering your property and following the ordinance. This process showcases a responsible owner and his or her commitment to guest safety and community harmony. Killeen's Short-Term Rental program is open to all operators who are dedicated to offering exceptional experiences to travelers while maintaining the well-being of the community.

There is a two-part workshop being offered to educate and assist property owners. Session one teaches operators about the Hotel Occupancy Tax and it is on Saturday, May 4 from 1-4p.m. at the Killeen Arts and Activities Center (801 North 4th Street, Room B102).

Session two teaches operators how to acquire and keep a short-term rental permit. That workshop is on Saturday, May 18 from 1-4p.m. at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center (3601 South WS Young Drive).
