Health Alert – U. S. Embassy (Paris, France) (12/3/2021)

Location: France

Event: On November 26, the White House announced a travel restriction for certain travelers physically present within the Republic of Botswana, the Kingdom of Eswatini, the Kingdom of Lesotho, the Republic of Malawi, the Republic of Mozambique, the Republic of Namibia, the Republic of South Africa, and the Republic of Zimbabwe due to the detection of a variant of the SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The policy does not apply to U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents and certain other categories of travelers. See the text of the announcement here. The new restrictions and requirements took effect on November 29.

On December 1, the French government announced new testing requirements for people entering France. Beginning December 4, all people age 12 and over entering France from outside the European Union will require a negative COVID test performed within 48 hours before departure, regardless of their vaccination status. Unvaccinated people entering France from another EU member country will need to have a negative Covid test performed in the 24 hours before their trip. Fully vaccinated people with a French or EU health pass will not require a test.

In addition, France will be implementing strict new restrictions, including heightened testing and quarantine requirements, on travelers arriving from several countries in southern Africa as well as Mauritius. With extremely limited exceptions, non-French or EU-citizens will not be able to travel between France and those nations. U.S. citizens intending to transit France to or from those nations should check with their airlines and be prepared to seek alternate routes. More information will be available on the French Ministry of Interior website https://www.interieur.gouv.fr/Actualites/L-actu-du-Ministere/Certificate-of-international-travel by December 4.

U.S. citizens are reminded that transportation schedules can change without notice. Please check with airlines/carriers regarding flight cancellations and/or restrictions and keep apprised of the testing and vaccine requirements for any country you are transiting. The U.S. Embassy urges U.S. citizens to have a departure plan that does not depend on U.S. government assistance. U.S. citizens are also encouraged to read our webpage on What the Department of State Can and Can't do in a Crisis.
