First Annual Muni Challenge Tees off on Sunday

The first annual Muni Challenge, an event for area golfers to play all three Toledo municipal golf courses (Ottawa Park, Detwiler Park, and Collins Park) will tee off this Sunday. Toledo City Councilman Sam Melden and Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz will be joined by golf enthusiasts to play a round at Ottawa Park Golf Course on Sunday, May 1, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. to kick-off the challenge.

The contest runs from May 1 to May 31. Participants who have played all three municipal courses will receive a Glass City Muni Card, which will reward players with one free round of golf, discounts on local golf throughout the year, opportunities for daily prize drawings, and other discounts from area businesses.

As confirmed by the success of last year's Solheim Cup and the recent announcement of the 2027 U.S. Women's Open coming to Toledo, the sport of golf has both a rich history and current momentum in our city.

Toledo's contribution to the game of golf is not only highlighted by Toledo/Sylvania hosting an LPGA event for the past 38 years making it the second oldest event on the LPGA Tour, but also our having hosted four U.S. Opens and six Major Championships.

The groundbreaking work of local golf visionaries S.P. Jermain and Arthur Hills started Toledo on its course in the golf world.

Jermain organized the first group of women golfers in our city and developed courses around the country, including Collins Park Golf Course in Toledo, which is now celebrating its 90th year as a public course.

Growing up directly across the street from Ottawa Park Golf Course in Toledo, a 7-year-old Arthur Hills was able to play a round for 26 cents in 1937.

Fast forward to 1972, Arthur Hills created Detwiler Park Golf Course, one of the first courses and Toledo's third municipal course. After over 50 years in the golf course architecture business and more than 200 courses designed, the name Arthur Hills is synonymous with the most beautiful, fun to play, and classic golf courses in the world.

"These two Toledo legends forever changed the game of golf and municipal golf in our city," Mayor Kapszukiewicz said.

"It is in their spirit that we are creating the first annual Muni Challenge so that we can build on that momentum by challenging our local golfers to play our historic courses."

"I know how important our municipal courses are because, like so many Toledoans, I first learned the game of golf on the "Muni" closest to me: Collins Park," Councilman Sam Melden said.

"This first-ever Muni Challenge is so exciting because it is a reminder of Toledo's rich golf history, and an invitation to all Toledoans to get out there and enjoy these historic courses in their own backyard."
