Take a fresh breath as the City promotes Air Quality Awareness Week

Published on May 05, 2024

Each year in May, the City of Fort Worth promotes Air Quality Awareness Week (AQAW), hosted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). AQAW 2024 will be celebrated May 6-10.

Air Quality Awareness Week provides residents and visitors the opportunity to learn about the causes of poor air quality and how people can prepare, respond and care for their local air.

This year's theme is "Knowing Your Air" and each day throughout the week, the EPA will highlight resources that increase air quality awareness and encourages people to take action and incorporate their air quality knowledge into their daily living.

The daily topics for AQAW 2024 are:

  • Monday, May 6 - Wildland Fires and Smoke
  • Tuesday, May 7 - Asthma and Your Health
  • Wednesday, May 8 - Air Quality and Climate
  • Thursday, May 9 - Air Quality and Environmental Justice
  • Friday, May 10 - Air, Animals and Plants

Air Quality awareness is more than just understanding the Air Quality Index, it is about education for air in your specific area and what associated health effects may be a concern for your community.

Take action and care for air

By making small changes, we can all contribute to cleaner air in Fort Worth and greater North Texas. Even simple activities can help improve the local air quality, such as:

  • Carpooling
  • Using public transit
  • Walking or biking to lunch
  • Bringing lunch to work
  • Consolidating trips and errands
  • Keeping tires properly inflated
  • Driving the speed limit
  • Using electric-powered vehicles or lawn equipment
