Mayor Jane Castor and the City of Tampa Mayor's Hispanic Advisory Council proudly announce Ms. Sylvia Acevedo, rocket scientist and former CEO of the Girl Scouts of the USA, will be the keynote speaker for the Council's 22nd annual Latinos Unidos Luncheon. The event will take place virtually at 12 noon on May 5, 2021.

SYLVIA ACEVEDO, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, GIRL SCOUTS OF THE USA

Sylvia Acevedo is the former CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA. A former Girl Scout herself from Las Cruces, New Mexico and longtime board member for the organization. Acevedo became interim CEO in June 2016 before officially taking over the nonprofit in May 2017. One of her chief goals is to prepare millions of girls for STEM-related jobs over the next several years. To enable that process, she's created new science- and technology-related badges covering topics like robotics and coding, and is working with top industry experts at NASA, Palo Alto Networks, and Raytheon to ensure the nonprofit's curriculum builds skills that employers will value.

Ms. Acevedo worked previously as an engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, IBM, and held top executive positions at Apple, Autodesk, and Dell. She was also a commissioner for the Presidential Initiative for Hispanic Educational Excellence, which focuses on increasing learning opportunities and achievement gaps within that community, and formerly ran her own trend analysis company called Communicard. Ms. Acevedo earned a bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering from New Mexico State University, and a master's in the same field from Stanford University.

This year, due to our current circumstances and in an effort to provide more ways for the community to get involved, MHAC is proud to introduce the inaugural Viva Tampa virtual run. This will allow community members and their families to conduct an outdoor activity with philanthropy in mind. The Latinos Unidos Luncheon and Virtual Run event proceeds provide need-based scholarships to local Hispanic students enrolled at Hillsborough Community College, University of South Florida and University of Tampa.
