Deutsche Telekom, in collaboration with a group of international musicians and AI experts, will present one of the world's most significant cultural projects on Saturday, October 9 - the completed 10th Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven.
The work on Beethoven's 10th Symphony, which began in June 2019, lasted a full 730 days. It involved ten scientists and AI experts working at Harvard and Cornell, 56 musicians from the Bonn Symphony Orchestra, organist Cameron Carpenter, all under Dr. Matthias Röder, award-winning musician and technology strategist.
The 10th Symphony was selected because of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the world's most famous composers. In the last year of his life, he began writing the 10th Symphony and unfortunately could not complete it, leaving the world deprived of another masterpiece. The completion of Beethoven's "tenth" arose in response to the question of whether artificial intelligence could be creative.
For the project to be successfully realized, artificial intelligence analyzed Beethoven's entire artistic legacy - symphonies, notes, musical drafts, and scores, which were converted into a machine-readable form. The most applicable machine learning method was then selected, using voice processing algorithms because music, like language, consists of small units - letters or notes - that give meaning only when they are meaningfully combined, which was especially important for this experiment.
After two years of hard work, 66 GB of material, more than 10,000 exchanged documents and 10,000 music recordings and two million notes with which artificial intelligence was practiced, the Symphony will premiere on October 9, 2021, starting at 7 p.m. at the Telekom Forum in Bonn. Another performance will take place on October 27 at Elbphilharmonie, one of the world's most famous classical music concert halls.
The world premiere of Beethoven's 10th Symphony will be available live via: https://www.hrvatskitelekom.hr/beethoven, and the BMG record company will release the album "Beethoven X - The AI Project" on CD and in digital form on all platforms. Until then, a short audio recording of the 10th Symphony is available for listening here.
