RESCONSTRUCTION PROJECT ON WALTON BLVD. FROM DIXIE HWY. TO JUST EAST OF SASHABAW ROAD TO START 4/19

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), in partnership with Waterford Township, will begin a reconstruction project on Walton Boulevard from Dixie Highway to Sashabaw Road beginning Monday, April 19.

During the first stage, Walton Boulevard will close to through traffic from Dixie Highway to Floradale Road for approximately one week for pavement removal and replacement. During the closure, the detour route for traffic will be Dixie Highway to Sashabaw Road, back to Walton Boulevard and vice versa. Once this stage is complete, Walton Boulevard will reopen with two-way traffic on the north half of the road, while the south side is repaved.

Pedestrian, residential and business access will be maintained throughout the project.

The approximately $2.7 million project is mostly funded with federal dollars with the remaining costs shared by Waterford Township, RCOC and Oakland County general government (through the Tri-Party Program).

The project includes:

  • Removal of existing concrete pavement
  • Paving with eight inches of asphalt
  • Drainage repairs
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant pedestrian crosswalks
  • Traffic signal modernization at the Sashabaw/Walton intersection
  • Spot curb and gutter replacement
  • New signs and pavement markings

The second stage will begin as soon as the first stage is complete and will involve pavement removal and replacement on the south half of the road, with traffic shifted onto the north half. With the exception of the one-week closure during the first stage, two-way traffic will be maintained on Walton Blvd. for the duration of the project.

During the final stage of the project, traffic will be shifted to the south half of the road. Two-way traffic with center-turn lane will be maintained during this phase.

There will be a short-term closure of the north leg of the Sashabaw/Walton intersection for pavement replacement. The detour will be Maybee Road to Dixie Highway, back to Sashabaw Road and vice versa. Dates for the traffic shift and intersection closure will be announced later.

Walton Boulevard construction is expected to be completed in early fall. The contractor for the project is Pro-Line Asphalt of Washington Township.

This section of Walton Boulevard carries approximately 20,000 vehicles per day. For more information on the Walton Boulevard project, visit: http://rcocweb.org/563/Walton-Blvd
