UC Business Analytics Students Selected as Best U. S. Team at INFORMS International Student Competition
The University of Cincinnati was one of only eight student teams from around the world to compete at the INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics in Las Vegas in April.
Just eight student teams from around the world were selected as finalists to compete in the inaugural Operations Research and Analytics Student Team Competition, held April 4, 2017, at the INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics in Las Vegas, Nevada. The University of Cincinnati Masters of Science in Business Analytics team placed fourth overall and was the top U.S. team.
The student teams were given the same business problem, data sets and access to software to solve a challenging problem using an operations research and analytics approach. A panel of industry and academic experts judged written submissions to select the finalists based on each team's use of the full analytics process, from framing the problem to methodology selection, data use, model building and quantitative analysis. Selected teams presented their solutions to the judging panel at the INFORMS conference in April
The 2017 problem, sponsored by Syngenta, challenged the teams to discover why, despite earlier data analysis to the contrary, strains of soybean varieties selected and bred for commercialization are under-performing. By reviewing previous data, students had to identify what different choices could have been made and how that data could have been used to make better decisions.
The Lindner College of Business students Junbo Liu, Jasmine Ding, Yan Jiang, Xiaoming Lu, Linxi Yang, Rui Ding, Wei Yue, Jing Gao, and Xiaojun Wang all attend the highly ranked Masters of Science in Business Analytics program in the Linder College of Business at the University of Cincinnati.
INFORMS, the leading international association for professionals in operations research and analytics, introduced this new competition to highlight young talent and provide operations research and analytics students the opportunity to solve the kinds of real-world workplace challenges they will face during their careers.
