Students organize panel discussion about social movement activism for course’s final project

Under the guidance of Anthony Pinn, Rice University's Agnes Cullen Arnold Distinguished Professor of Humanities and founding director of the Center for Engaged Research and Collaborative Learning (CERCL), students in Religion 216 spent the spring semester delving into the complex intersections of religion, politics and social justice, particularly within the context of the Black Lives Matter movement. For their final project, they organized a panel discussion titled "Empower & Lead: Voices of Change" set for April 19 from 4-6 p.m.

"The event seeks to bring together voices from various sectors of local activism to discuss the challenges faced by leaders in the Black community, share successes and talk about the future of Black leadership," said co-organizer Artie Throop.

Confirmed panelists for the event include Marvin Pierre, the co-founder and executive director of the nonprofit organization 8 Million Stories, and Rice sophomore Avalon Hogans, a passionate activist and poet. Assistant professor of anthropology Victoria Massie will lead the conversation, offering insight and guidance drawn from her extensive experience.
