Medium Green and Large Green Pony Hunters and Pony Jumper Team Medals Shine on Day Four at 2022 USEF Pony Final presented by Honor Hill Farms
Lexington, Ky. - A beautiful day was the backdrop for day four at the 2022 USEF Pony Final presented by Honor Hill Farms. Friday brought the first grand champion title of the 2022 Pony Finals with JJ Torano and FRF Favor earning the Overall Grand Champion Green Pony Hunter, while Alexa Elle Lignelli and Higher Love were the Overall Reserve Grand Green Pony Hunter. Champions were also crowned in the Medium Green and Large Green Pony Hunter National Championships, team medals were claimed in the USEF Pony Jumper Team National Championship, and the Medium Regular Pony Hunter National Championship completed its first two phases for an action-packed day.
JJ Torano and FPF Favor Win Medium Green Pony Hunter National Championship
JJ Torano (Wellington, Fla.) clinched his first Pony Finals title by taking top honors in the Medium Green Pony Hunter National Championship with FPF Favor. He and Jet Show Stable's 2015 Welsh Pony mare were fifth in the Model phase with a score of 258.78 and second in the Under Saddle phase with a score of 265.87. The pair's solid round won the Over Fences phase with a score of 253.78 and secured the overall title with a final score of 1032.21.
"It means a lot especially for this pony because she is green and this is only her fifth show in her life," Torano said of his national champion title. "We just started showing her in June. I thought she went great today. I wasn't really hoping for anything that great, but it ended up being really, really good."
Torano has had a busy week with entries in each of the pony hunter divisions as well as riding in the Medal on Sunday. After being close to winning earlier in the week, Torano maintained his composure and scored the tri-color ribbon.
"On [FPF Favor], I didn't expect coming in that high. I just decided I would ride my ride and hope it would go well," Torano said of his round. "The other [ponies] I was kind of expecting it and I think I kind of almost jinxed myself a little bit because I was doing pretty well with all of them. But with her I thought hope for the best, and she went great."
At the conclusion of Friday's competition, Torano and FPF Favor's overall score was the highest of the green hunter ponies to earn the Overall Grand Champion Green Pony Hunter title, receiving the Brownland Farm perpetual trophy.

Alexa Elle Lignelli and Higher Love Score Large Green Pony Hunter National Championship
Alexa Elle Lignelli rode Higher Love to the win in the Large Green Pony Hunter National Championship with an overall score of 1027.72. Lignelli (New York, N.Y.) and The Lignelli Family's 2014 Welsh Pony cross gelding started the competition with a score of 247.84 in the Model phase and a score of 260.80. The duo climbed from fifth to first overall by winning the Over Fences phase with a score of 259.54.
"I loved the course for him," said Lignelli of the former European eventing pony who is in his fifth show stateside. "He goes very lope-y. It is all based off pace with him. Once you set the pace, everything comes up super nicely for him."
Lignelli noted that Pony Finals is a team effort saying, "It is not only special to me. It is special to everyone on the team who tried to prep him. It's not just what you show in the ring. It is behind the scenes-prepping before the model, the standing up, the practicing, all of the things that go into the long days here. I mean we are showing at 7:30. It is a long day! All of the team members, everyone contributed. It is so special. It is the final of the year and all of the ponies come, and the best one comes out and wins."
As the last division of the day, Lignelli and Higher Love did not have to wait long to find out that the earned the Overall Reserve Grand Green Pony Hunter title.

Zone 3 Earns Gold in USEF Pony Jumper Team National Championship
Five teams competed in the USEF Pony Jumper Team National Championship on Friday afternoon over Jasen Shelley's solid track. Zone 3 won the team gold medal with four faults, while Zone 10 collected the team silver medal and Zone 8 took the team bronze medal.
Savannah Smith (Harwood, Md.) and Wishlea Star Dasher, Tamara Doloff's 2005 Welsh Pony gelding, led off for Zone 3, tallying four faults in the first round before going clear in the second round. Katie Smith (Summerfield, N.C.) and Never a Gray Day, her 2009 Welsh Pony gelding, went next in the team's order and were double-clear. Linen Owens (Marion, N.C.) and Kinka's Girl, Ponies Unlimited, LLC's 2005 New Forest Pony mare, ran into some issues and served as the drop score in both rounds. Aundrea Hillyard (Marshall, Va.) and Magic Dragon, Hidden Ridge's 2009 Belgian Sport Horse gelding, served as Zone 3's anchor and solidified the team's win by going double-clear.
The team had talented ponies who have taught the riders to manage their mounts' athletic abilities. "He is really, really fast but you also need to be really accurate so to get in the middle of that is pretty hard on him because he is not an easy ride," said Savannah Smith. "Overall, I'm really happy with how he did."
While Hillyard and Owens have been to Pony Finals for pony hunters, everyone on the team was doing the pony jumper division for the first time and enjoyed the experience.
"It has been really fun. We had never met each other before," Hillyard said of the team experience. "It is a lot of motivation from the other girls because everyone is wanting to do well. They are all rooting for you."
Katie Smith agreed about the positive effects of being on a team saying, "It is a lot more motivation going into it because you are going into a round where the jumps are massive, so having little a bit of extra confidence is really good."
Owens had a common sentiment shared by her teammates saying, "I will definitely be back next year for pony jumpers."

Heading into the Individual Final, Hillyard and Magic Dragon sit atop the individual standings with a score of zero faults. The Individual Final takes place at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

JJ Torano and Paris Charm sits atop the leaderboard in the Medium Regular Pony Hunter National Championship. Torano and Megan D'Amico's 2008 Welsh Pony mare had solid performances in the first two phases of competition, placing third in both the Model and Under Saddle phases with scores of 257.28 and 265.79, respectively. The pair has a narrow lead in the 133-combinations field heading into the final phase.
The Medium Regular Pony Hunter National Championship will conclude on Saturday, August 13, with the Over Fences phase.
