Snow Removal Procedures

As we progress through the winter season, here are a few reminders regarding snow removal procedures in the City of Aberdeen. The guidelines below are approximate. If a snow event does not reach the depth targets in a single event, then the process does not continue through the remaining steps.

  1. After a snow event has started and the snow begins to accumulate on pavement, salt trucks are dispatched to treat arterial routes and key intersections.
  2. When snow accumulations on roadways reach around 2", plow trucks begin clearing arterial routes. (See snow removal map for specific routes)
  3. When snow accumulations on roadways reach between 3"- 4" and the major arterial routes have been cleared, residential routes begin. Once a residential snow emergency has been declared, all vehicles must be moved off streets until plowing has been completed. Any cars remaining on residential streets will be towed to a previously cleared area.
  4. Additional information regarding snow removal and how to sign up for snow removal alerts can be found on the City website at www.aberdeen.sd.us.
